cecilia portillo
i’m a mexican-american artist, designer, and researcher from ciudad juárez, currently pursuing a master in design studies at the harvard graduate school of design. my work brings together archival research, ethnographic observation, spatial analysis, and artistic practice to study urban form and everyday life in conflict-affected contexts.
i’m particularly interested in how histories of conflict or peace remain present in the city, especially for women, and in how art and design can open questions around public life, memory, and peace. moving between research and making, my practice remains grounded in ciudad juárez and the border region while engaging broader questions of conflict and civic life.
before beginning graduate school, i studied global food security at mcgill university and worked across social impact, food security, web and brand design, and strategy with organizations including the un world food programme, environmental defense fund, one drop foundation, blue meridian partners, and indigenous communities in mexico and canada. i’ve also founded and co-founded projects spanning textile art, social design, and research creation, including unruj, chefis, and mutual design.
